When Looney Labs asked me to redesign their old Chrononauts box and their 'Early American' (EAC) version, it was a pretty tough design challenge. Not only did we need to differentiate between the original game and the EAC version, but 'Early American' sounds as exciting as a high school history lesson.
So my solution was to create an interesting, flowing, abstract design for the main Chrononauts game, and then to alter a similar design with steampunk elements for EAC.
To be clear, the game is about time travel, not steampunk, but just that suggestion on the packaging created a much different perception of the game. The steampunk gears wrap around the corners of the box and there is a steampunk-styled timepiece in place of the simple clock on the original version of the game. Also, the electric design on the front of the box was adapted to a more 'red, white and blue' color scheme.
